U.S. stocks extend gains, major indexes up 1%

    U.S. stocks rallied on Monday, with major indexes jumping in a broad advance and hitting session highs in afternoon trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.3% to 24,664. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% to 2,685. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 1% to 7,175. At current levels, both the Dow and the S&P were on track for their highest close since March 21. The day's gains were broad, with all 11 S&P 500 sectors higher on the day and nine of them gaining at least 1%. Among the biggest gainers, consumer staples were up 1.4% while energy gained 1.2%. Among the most widely traded stocks, Bank of America rose 0.5% after reporting its quarterly results.
