It is uncertain how the Trump administration's fight to lower trade barriers will turn out, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said Thursday. "It's very hard to sit here today and say which way it's going," Powell said in an interview with Marketplace. Powell said he could imagine situations which could be "very challenging" for the Fed, for instance where inflation is going up and the economy is weakening. Powell said he was unconcerned about pressure from the Trump White House to keep interest rates low. "Nothing has been said to me publicly or privately that gives me any concern about our independence," he said.
